 Basic principles for Exercise

  • If you are just starting to exercise it is important to start slowly. Don't start walking 10 000 steps or running for 40 minutes on day one - this could lead to injury. Start exercising at a comfortable pace for a short time and follow the 10% rule. Each week increase the amount of exercise that you are doing by 10% until you reach your desired goal. It may take you several weeks/months, but that's OK!
  • Some weeks you will feel good, some not so good. This is normal - don't give up! Every little bit counts. There may be some days when you aren't able to get in your planned exercise. Don't worry. The key is to establish a regular pattern of physical activity.
  • It is important to listen to your body. If you don't feel well or something is sore, take a break.
  • Be safe. Walk in groups or in areas that you know are safe. Take a phone in your pocket and let someone know where you will be going.
  • Exercise programs should always be taken in conjunction with a healthy eating plan to maximise weight loss.
    • Some basic eating principles to follow:
    • Eat a large variety of fresh fruit and vegetables.
    • Aim to eat as much whole food as possible
    • Avoid eating saturated fat, refined food, sugar and salt
    • Drink plenty of water
    • Consult a medical Doctor before starting a new exercise program.
